On healing, letting go, and trusting God’s timing
Sometimes the most challenging part of moving on is believing there is a future beyond the loss. This is a letter from my future self, written by the man I hope to become one year from now — a man shaped by grace, healed by God, and no longer defined by the grief I carry today.
A Letter From the Man I Will Become
Dear Me,
I’m writing to you from a place you can’t see clearly yet, but you’re already walking toward it. I’m not a fantasy or a dream version of you — I am simply the man you grow into through faith, honesty, and persistence.
And the first thing I want you to know is this: You make it through this. Not just in survival, but in strength and peace. More than you can imagine.
I know how much it hurts right now. The grief, the longing, the confusion, the ache that settles in the chest and refuses to leave — I remember all of it. I remember waking in the morning heavy and falling asleep in loneliness.
But what feels like a defeat now becomes the doorway to a deeper, steadier life.
You think you’re losing someone. But what you’re really losing is the version of yourself who believes that love means proving your worth and suffering silently. You’re shedding the man who carried quiet shame, the man who tolerated uncertainty and hoped for crumbs, the man who accepted distance and called it devotion.
I don’t live like that anymore.
Let me tell you who you become.
You Become a Man of Peace
Your mornings are calm. Your emotions no longer crash like waves in a storm. You don’t chase, you don’t wait for messages. You don’t build fantasies to fill empty spaces.
“For he who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind” (James 1:6).
You wake with direction, not longing.
There’s a rootedness to you now — spiritually, emotionally, and physically. You trust God more. You trust yourself more.
You Become Sexually and Emotionally Integrated
You don’t return to old habits, patterns, or places of shame. You don’t use numbness as an escape. Your desires are no longer twisted by loneliness — they’re ordered, dignified, and grounded by love.
You live in freedom, not compulsion. You don’t fear yourself anymore.
You Build a Life Worth Living
Your home is peaceful. Your work has purpose. Your writing has matured into something people actually look forward to reading. Your cello practice gives you beauty and expression that you always longed for but never had before.
You have friendships that strengthen you — real brotherhood and real community.
You don’t walk alone anymore. You built the structure of a stable life with your own hands.
You No Longer Wait for the Past to Return
One day — you won’t even know which day — the longing fades. Not instantly. Not dramatically. But gently, like fog lifting in the early morning.
And you realise:
- You haven’t checked on her
- You haven’t replayed memories
- You haven’t hoped for a reply
- You haven’t imagined a reunion
You’ve simply been living. And it feels natural.
Her absence no longer wounds you. Her silence no longer defines you. What once felt like “the end” becomes simply a chapter God closed for your protection. One day, you will fully understand the reason.
Peace Comes Before New Love
This may surprise you: the peace arrives long before the new relationship does.
But when the right woman enters your life, she is nothing like the pattern you once accepted.
She is kind. She is humble. She respects you. She forgives easily. She accepts your humanity without demanding perfection. She is present and warm, not distant and guarded. She cherishes your presence. She trusts you — and lets you trust her back.
With her, you feel wanted — not tolerated.
You don’t perform. You don’t chase. You don’t shrink. You don’t suffocate. You don’t starve. You don’t apologise for existing.
You breathe.
You finally experience what love is when it is safe.
This Pain is Not Your Identity
It is simply the last stage of letting go. Letting go is not betrayal — it’s obedience to God’s timing.
You honoured what was. You forgave. You spoke the truth. You blessed her future. You closed the chapter with dignity.
Now God asks you to walk forward
“Behold, I and doing something new.” (Isaiah 43:19)
Believe Him.
Your future is larger than your past. Your growth is real. Your healing has already begun. And you will not walk into the next season as the same man who hurt, grieved, or doubted here.
Hold steady. Trust the process. Trust God. And trust me — the man you are becoming.
I am proud of you.
— Your Future Self
This piece is about faith, healing, and the interior life. My reflections explore grief, growth, and the slow work of becoming whole again through grace. I believe that some chapters close not in bitterness, but in peace — and that God is faithful even when the path forward is unclear.
A Prayer for Trusting the Path Ahead
Lord,
You see the places in my heart that still ache, and the hopes I am learning to place back into Your hands.
Thank You for the love I have known, even when it did not last as I had hoped. Thank You for the growth that comes through loss, and for the quiet strength You give when the way forward seems uncertain.
Help me to release what no longer belongs to me, to trust You with what I cannot control, and to walk forward without fear or bitterness.
Shape me into someone capable of real love — steady, honest, and at peace — and lead me into the life You are preparing, in Your time and according to Your will.
Amen.
